Intellectual Property

Intellectual property (IP) is defined as the property of the "products" of one's mind and thoughts which may include but is not limited to their exclusive knowledge. In terms of information technology and multimedia, the most common forms of IP are copyrights, patents, trademarks and trade secrets. It is important to respect the intellectual property of others and copyright laws as well as licencing exists in order to protect the integrity of IP.

Licensing

A licence agreement is a type of contract where a holder of intellectual property allows for another person to use their intellectual property within certain decided limits outlined by the contract. There are three types of licenses; exclusive licence, in which an exclusive licensee is allowed to use and commercialise the licensor's IP; non-exclusive license, in which the licensor can licence the IP to various parties; and sole license which can be thought of as a combination of both an exclusive and non-exclusive licence and allows for both the licensee and licensor to use and maintain control over the IP.
